Matthew Olin is a designer, educator, and creative working alongside—and inspired by—the shores of Lake Superior. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

As a designer, my commitment revolves around collaborating with a diverse range of clients, including numerous small businesses. Guided by a deep-rooted belief in the power of design to foster economic sustainability and make the world a better place, my efforts are dedicated to uplifting my clients' values and visions. I strive to work with clients who share a genuine dedication to creating a positive difference in the world, aligning their values with my own.

My design philosophy centers on thoughtfulness and excellence, seeking to create meaningful and impactful solutions that resonate with both my clients and their audiences. By leveraging the potential of design, I aim to propel my clients’ success by elevating their branding, enhancing their digital presence, and refining their product designs.

Beyond aesthetics and functionality, I also seek to foster lasting relationships with my clients, becoming a reliable partner in their growth and evolution. By continually pushing the boundaries of design and staying relevant with emerging trends and technologies, I am committed to delivering solutions that stand the test of time.

My teaching philosophy revolves around the belief that creativity and critical thinking can thrive in a supportive and inclusive environment. I empower my students by equipping them with the necessary tools, knowledge, and guidance to develop into skilled designers and creative problem solvers. I place a strong emphasis on hands-on projects, collaborative learning, and real-world applications, which helps bridge the gap between theory and practical skills. I actively encourage experimentation and view mistakes as valuable learning opportunities, while also celebrating diverse perspectives. My hope is to instill a genuine passion for the power of good design and cultivate a growth mindset, inspiring my students to remain lifelong learners and influential contributors to the design industry.

Creativity has been a guiding force shaping my life. My journey began with a vivid imagination and an early passion for art, evolving into a professional commitment to nurturing creativity across disciplines. Embracing the belief that creativity knows no bounds, I work with clients and colleagues across a multitude of industries and disciplines, welcoming interdisciplinary collaboration to glean fresh perspectives from unexpected sources.

In my design approach, I embrace a spirit of experimentation, challenging norms and refusing to settle for “good enough.” This mindset has led me to discover unconventional solutions that are aesthetically captivating and yield strategic effectiveness. Beyond artistic expression, I view creativity as a powerful problem-solving tool, turning obstacles into gateways for innovation. I believe creativity not only enriches the world's beauty but also holds the potential to drive meaningful change and enhance lives.

As a parent to three young kids, my commitment to nurturing creativity and growth extends beyond the classroom. Just as I foster innovation and creativity in my professional endeavors, I wholeheartedly apply the same dedication to nurturing and supporting my children's development. Embracing the role of being parents with love and care, my wife and I strive to create environments that encourage curiosity, exploration, and self-expression. We understand that just as creative ideas need time and patience to flourish, so do young minds. We aim to instill in them the value of imagination, critical thinking, and empathy, empowering them to embrace what makes them unique and unlock their full potential.
